A steppe is a region characterised by plains with grass or shrubs but almost no trees. The word is Ukrainian in origin and refers to the region stretching across to eastern Mongolia. However, the American prairies are also steppes.
Steppes are often arid - although not quite a desert. They may be denuded of vegetation during parts of the year. They are also subject to extreme variations in temperature. In the Mongolian steppes, day-to-night temperature differences can exceed 30 Celsius degrees.
Desertification, extreme dryness, and water shortage
Altitude can influence the conditions in a steppe climate by affecting temperature and precipitation patterns. Higher altitudes in steppe regions tend to have cooler temperatures and possibly more precipitation due to orographic effects, while lower altitudes may experience hotter and drier conditions characteristic of a steppe climate.
Eastern Colorado has a steppe or semiarid climate because it is located in the rain shadow of the Rocky Mountains, which block moisture from reaching the region. This results in low precipitation levels and increased evaporation, leading to the dry conditions characteristic of steppe and semiarid climates.
Desert climate is like the steppe climate except that the steppe has more rainfall. There is also some grass in the steppe.
"Steppe" is literally pronounced as the word "step".
