A programming language is a language which is able to do logical and mathematical operations. (examples could include Java, C, C++, ruby, python, javascript, PHP and assembly)

Other languages, such as markup languages (html is an example), are used purely to describe data. They cannot perform logic or maths.

There are other languages as well, which are used for various purposes such as storing, transporting or manipulting data. (SQL is a language used to manipulate a database, and XML was designed to transport data)

  • Small size
  • Extensive use of function calls
  • Loose typing -- unlike PASCAL
  • Structured language
  • Low level (Bit Wise) programming readily available
  • Pointer implementation - extensive use of pointers for memory, array, structures and functions.

C has now become a widely used professional language for various reasons.

  • It has high-level constructs.
  • It can handle low-level activities.
  • It produces efficient programs.
  • It can be compiled on a variety of computers.
  • Modularity.
  • Portability.
  • Extendability.
  • Speed.
  • Flexibility.
  • Debugging will be easier and faster.

Its main drawback is that it has poor error detection which can make it off putting to the beginner.

I am guessing you typed the question wrong, the way I understand your question is "Why is the programming language named C++ and not C ? " The answer to this is that there is a programming language called C, and in that programming language the ++ means increment by one. So C++ is the language C improved, as such it can read and compile all C programs in addition to having other features that C does not have.
