Since the Koi Carp did not evolve naturally but was developed by selective, line and cross breeding it does not have a natural place in nature. It is a fish, it has all the necessary characteristics in its physical make up to enable it to survive under the protective aquatic conditions provided by man. In the wild, their bright colours would undoubtedly result in them being easy prey to birds and other fish eaters. Over time this selective culling of the brighter coloured fish done by the predators in the environment would result in the fish returning to its natural colouring of a drab grey/brown back and a silvery underside.
Koi varieties are distinguished by coloration, patterning, and scalation. Some of the major colors are white, black, red, yellow, blue, and cream. The most popular category of koi is the Gosanke, which is made up of the kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku, and Showa Sanshoku varieties.
