The characters are the objects (usually people or animals, but sometimes plants or inanimate objects) in the story, the ones that have a roll. Like in Humpty Dumpty, and how he sat on a wall, would be a character since he had a roll. yet the wall wouldn't be. But sometimes, like with the egg, inanimate objects are given living qualities and can be characters. In Hansel and Gretel, the two kids and the which are characters, but the important bread crumbs aren't.
