For getting extra options in games (like in Augumented Reality) or for StreetPass Mii Plaza for carrying on the game(s).
Play coins are special coins used for certain games. Like in Find Mii (under the street pass thing), you can hire people for 2 play coins. The pedometer in the 3DS will calculate your steps you take when the 3DS is closed. Every 100 steps will give you 1 play coin, up to 10 coins per day. There is also a limit of 300 unused play coins.
100 steps per game coin, with a limit of 10 earned per day, and an upward limit of 300 unspent coins.
When playing the Nintendo 3DS you walk 100 steps and play no coins show up are because of two reasons. - You already walked 1000 steps with the limit of 10 coins per day - You have the maximum amount of unused coins (300) To fix this problem, you either change the date to get more coins, or you use them up so you are not a the maximum limit.
The maximum number of coins you can earn in a single day is 10. (1000 steps) If you are not earning any coins for your steps then you have likely already hit this limit. The maximum you can earn in total is 300 without spending any. So if you reach this limit, you'll have to spend some before you can earn more.
To earn Play Coins quickly on a Nintendo 3DS, you can shake the device while walking to simulate steps. The 3DS has a built-in pedometer that tracks movement and converts it into Play Coins. Alternatively, you can use the built-in accelerometer feature to simulate movement without physically walking. Remember that there is a daily limit on the number of Play Coins you can earn through these methods.
Play Coins are obtained by walking around with your 3DS. One Play Coin is obtained for every 100 steps registered on the pedometer, to a maximum of 10 per day. You can have a maximum of 300 Play Coins at any time.
the coins at club nintendo are not the same as the eShop money, therefor you cant transfer because they are not the same thing.

1. Streetpass 150 times. :(2. Each time you take a step with the 3DS on and closed, the console will give you a Step. 100 steps earns you a Play Coin (with the console) and 10 Play Coins allow you to invite a CPU customer, assuming you have progressed enough in the game.Notes about #2: the 3DS can only hold up to 300 Play Coins at any one time, so you'll have to do this a few times. Also, collecting Steps and thus Play Coins is easier than you might think: shaking the console is an alternative. Some eccentric people will even tie their 3DS to an elastic rope. While rather exotic, this strategy actually works, and it saves you the exertion. Alternatively, you can go for a hike or marathon (or not) and get fit too.
You can only earn 10 a day, and have a maximum of 300 unused coins at any one time. It will count that many, but no more.
You should play it, of course! Also remember to register it on Club Nintendo for Coins.
