There is a poem by Scottish Poet, Robert Burns, that goes

"The best laid schemes of mice and men

Gang aft a' gley (Often go wrong)

and leave us nought but grief and pain

for promised joy."

The poem says that the dreams of men are no more secure than those of mice. One of the themes of the book is crushed dreams, such as George and Lennie's dream of a home, of land and rabbits, and Curley's wife's dream of stardom, all of which are ruined.

"Of Mice and Men" carries connotations of friendship, loneliness, dreams, and harsh realities. It explores themes of powerlessness, discrimination, and the American Dream. The title itself suggests fragility and vulnerability, reflecting the precarious nature of the characters' lives.

In chapter four, the ranch hands tell Curly's wife "roll your hoop" making a reference (allusion) to her being young. (the hoop refers to a hoola hoop type game where she would be referred to as a child.)

That the best laid plans of mice and men often turn out ugly (Rpobert Burns 1785),

i.e. That all our plans, no matter who or what we are, often fail, and sometimes in tragic ways.
