Using tanning beds is no safer than getting a tan in the sun. The sun emits UVA and UVB rays where as the tanning bed only uses UVA. Both are damaging to your skin and run a high risk of causing skin cancer with repeated tans. You can still get a sunburn using a tanning bed. Plus, your eyes are at a higher risk of developing cataracts and corneal burns.

Is a tanning bed good for arthritis?

This is a question we get a lot and we hear a lot of feedback from tanners with arthritis. Tanning can offer relief to the symptoms of arthritis. It is the heat the tanning bed emits that can ease symptom's, not the light emitted. Often, sufferers will invest in a home tanning bed or packages solely to ease pain from arthritis. Most often, these tanners select lamps that offer the longest session times and the gentlest rays so they can take advantage of full twenty minute sessions such as the Diamond Sun lamps by Wolff Systems. Faster tanning sessions and more powerful lamps tend to offer less relief.

Is the exposure to a tanning lamp the same as exposure to the sun?

Tanning lamps are just as bad for your skin as prolonged exposure to the sun. Tanning lamps emit the same Ultra violet rays that can lead to wrinkles, premature aging, and skin cancer. Tanning lamps allow you to control your exposure to UVA rays, unlike out door tanning. However, tanning lamps can be two to three times more powerful than outside exposure to the sun. For information on the risks of tanning go to the FDA Risks of Tanning.
