Why is texting and driving so bad?

Texting while driving is considered as distracted driving, this is dangerous because when a person starts to text, his/her eyes, hands and mind will be off the road and his/her visual, cognitive, and manual skills will become impaired.

Most crashes occur 3 seconds after a distraction and according to the NHTSA, it is the leading cause of most vehicle crashes and near-crashes.

There is a public service video about this on YouTube. X Rated stuff, very graphic. at the most basic, if you are texting, you havent got your eyes on the road and you cant react quickly enough if the situation on the road changes.

It is very dangerous to text and drive. The chances of an accident increase 25% while texting, and also increase 25% with each person in the car.

Added: Not only must you take your eyes off the road, research has shown that the brain of a person driving and texting is more occupied with that activity than it is with the driving activity and such drivers are actually worse drivers than a driver who is legally intoxicated.

I'm not sure about worldwide, but in the USA, texting and driving can lead to:

1) Fines from the police officers, for it's now illegal.

2) You dangerously increase the risk of crashing into something or someone.

3) If you do crash, you'll end up either dead, seriously hurt (possibly handicapped), or your insurance rates will rise.

4) Most likely you'll lose your phone, too.

It's illegal in the UK and probably other European countries too, for the same reasons. Actually, of the above only (2) and (3) are the reasons: (1) and (4) are the possible penalties.... and how does point 4 stand against point 3?
