No one knows the precise date but it was around 33-34 years after Jesus birth. Chapter two of the book of Acts records the event which really started the church and hence Christianity. This was the day of Pentecost.

Christianity was term used by those who were persecuting those where followers of Christ during the 1st century. Christianity has its roots thousands of years back into Hebrew culture and the worship of an unseen God. Abraham, who is considered the father of faith by Orthodox Jews and Christians of today, lived around 2000BC.

It only was called Christianity after the birth of Christ, to distinguish a new sect of Judaism that claimed Christ was the Son of God - which He is.
