None of the defects occur after birth, they all develop in the womb. They continue to exist for the entire life of the person, of course.

When does spina bifida occur in pregnancy?

Spina bifida occurs during the first trimester. Spina bifida is in a class of birth defects known as neural tube defects. The neural tube eventually develops into the spinal cord, brain and the tissues that enclose them. In a normal pregnancy the tube forms early and closes by the twenty eighth day. With spina bifida portions of the neural tube fail to develop properly causing defects of varying severity in the spinal cord and back bones. This is a complicated topic and you can read more about it at the related link.

What is the medical term for congenital defect of the spinal column resulting in pouching of spinal membranes?

Early in development of the embryo the neural tube is formed. It is a narrow sheath that closes to form the brain and spinal cord of the embryo. As development progresses, the top of the tube becomes the brain and the remainder becomes the spinal cord. This process is usually complete by the 28th day of pregnancy. But if problems occur during this process, the result can be brain disorders called neural tube defects, including spina bifida.

Is Spina Bifida inherited or not?

Although doctors are unclear what causes spina bifida, they believe it is a mixture of genetics and environmental factors. Having a parent or sibling with spina bifida slightly increases the chance of a baby being born with a neural tube defect. Most babies with spina bifida are born to parents who have no history of neural tube defects.Folate deficiency (Vitamin B) is a known factor in women giving birth to a baby with a neural tube defect. One of the known preventative measures is to increase the amount of folic acid starting prior to conception. Ask your doctor or midwife if a high dose of folic acid is indicated for you.Spina bifida and other defects can occur before a women knows she is pregnant. Spina Bifida happens in the middle of the 4th week (by day 28) after conception when the two sides of developing fetus fail to develop or close properly, causing defects.A rise in the body temperature of more than four degrees Fahrenheit (2 Celsius) is another known factor in neural tube defects, women who think they may be pregnant are cautioned not to use hot tubs or to soak in a hot bath.Obesity prior to pregnancy and uncontrolled diabetes are another known factor in neural tube defects. As are some prescription medications. Talk to your doctor about any prescription medications you take.We are seeking mothers of children with Spina Bifida to participate in our study:http://www.sbgenetics.org/

Can spina bifida cause death?

Spina Bifida in and of itself does not cause death, however, in patients with Spina Bifida Cystica, the opening in the back leaves the baby susceptible to meningitis. For that reason, it is important that the opening be closed as soon as possible after birth. Many babies with Spina Bifida are also born with (or develop) Hydrocephalus, which is a build-up of fluid in the ventricles of the brain. If the Hydrocephalus goes untreated, brain damage, and ultimately death, can occur. One common cause of death in people with Spina Bifida is Arnold-Chiari Malformation Type II. This is a malformation of the brain in which the brain stem extends down into the cerebral tonsils. As a result, the brain may press against spinal nerves that control breathing, which can result in respiratory arrest and death.

Are Spina Bifida and rhesus negative blood connected?

No, they are not connected, although both conditions could occur in the same child. Any two conditions can occur in one child, but that does not necessarily mean the conditions are related. Rhesus negative blood depends on the blood type of the parents. Spina Bifida is a spinal condition, which has nothing to do with blood type.

How does spina bifida affect your body?

There are 3 forms of spina bifida. Spina Bifida Occulta, Meningocele, and Myelomeningocele. The worst form Myelomengingocele is the most common and the effects can include learning disabilities and sometimes developmental disabilities (mental retardation). It affects 1 in 1000 babies born. 90% of them are born with the most serious form (Myelomengingocele). Spina bifida usually results in some paralysis/loss of control of the legs, bowel, and bladder, and is often accompanied by hydrocephalus (water on the brain).

Can Spina Bifida effect animals?

Yes, for instance, it is known to sometimes occur in Manx cats and English Bulldogs, and can occur in other animals also. Please see the Related links below.
