There are huge differences between different types of input devices. An input device is anything that can be plugged into the computer, and is used to manipulate or interact with the data in some way.
One major difference is the type of connection used to connect the input device with the computer. The most common type of connection is the USB (Universal Serial Bus) connection. There is the PS-2 connector (purple circle) that is used to connect a mouse to the computer. There difference between these two is the shape, and the speed and bandwidth of the data that goes through these inputs.
Input devices have obvious differences, for example a keyboard and a mouse. A keyboard is used to type letters, while a mouse is used to click and select on things on the screen. There is the microphone, used to record sound on the computer, or a joystick, used to control aircraft in a flight simulator.
