Shinto (神道, shintō?) is the native religion of Japan and was once its state religion. It involves the worship of kami (神, kami?), spirits. Shinto is an animistic belief system. I am not personally very familiar with Shintoism, but from my understanding Shinto is the indigenous spirituality of the Japanese people. I believe that like Confucianism, it is based upon precise practice of rituals to make a connection between the past and the present. In Shintoism there is a belief that certain actions are impure and that you must perform purification rites to remove the impurity.

Buddhism is a religion based upon the training the mind to see clearly the actuality of how life and the universe works so that you can act with compassion and kindness and reach a state called enlightenment. Enlightenment being that state in which there is no suffering and one can fully comprehend the world without preconceptions.
