They are owned by different companies. Microsoft is one company, Open Office is owned by Sun Micro-systems.

HOWEVER Windows is an operating system which is the program which loads up and has all your programs on (and things like the Start Menu). Without an operating system, you can't use the computer. Windows isn't the only operating system, some other famous ones include Mac OSX and Linux.

∙ 12y agomany of the features in Open Office are 'transposable' to MS Office. The screen layouts look similar, and a lot of the functions are identical. If you're been used to MS Office you will easily adapt to Open Office.

The main difference is that with Open Office - if you're knowledgeable enough, you are permitted to re-write the software to suit your own situation and needs. Microsoft absolutely will not allow the end-user to legally modify their software under any circumstances !
