Impromtu means unrehearsed. Extemporaneous means made up on the spot. An impromtu piece may be extemporaneous, or it may be recited from memory.
Impromptu speaking involves delivering a speech without prior preparation, while extemporaneous speaking allows some preparation time (usually 30 minutes) before giving a speech. Impromptu speeches rely more on the speaker's ability to think quickly and react in the moment, while extemporaneous speeches allow for a more structured and thought-out response.
Impromptu speeches are given with little to no preparation, while extemporaneous speeches are delivered with some degree of preparation and research. In impromptu speeches, speakers rely more on their ability to think on their feet, whereas in extemporaneous speeches, speakers have more time to organize their thoughts and structure their arguments.
Both impromptu and extemporaneous speaking are public speaking styles where a person has limited time to prepare a speech. Impromptu is more "spur-of-the-moment" and extemp has more time of "limited prep." In speech competition, both events give competitors a topic, have a time limit for prep, and then the speaker must deliver the speech within a certain amount of time. Impromptu speaking tends to have more "random" topics (film titles, quotes, proverbs, names, etc.) while extemp is news oriented. Impromptu also has less time to work (get a topic, have 2 minutes or so to prep, and then 5-6 minutes to talk). Extemp gives the speaker a topic, they have 30 minutes to prepare a speech with citations (extempers use a box full of articles of research), and then have 8-10 minutes to deliver their speech. BOTH events allow for speakers to use a note card during their performance.
