From a Christian perspective, the main difference is in the purpose of the exodus as related by the movie and by The Bible. The movie takes the position that 'freedom' was the purpose of the exodus. This is a logical position if the New Testament is ignored. The problem with this position is that the freedom that was given them was that a whole generation died in the desert, and only the children were allowed into the Promised land.

Later remakes are much more cynical about such freedom and portray Moses as an angry man who sees God as an unknowable capricious God who dropped him in the desert to figure things out for himself.

The New Testament tells us that these things happened as an example, or a type. God promised Adam a savior for man and the rest of the book tells how it happened. The Hebrews were chosen to be witnesses for God, and their history is like a dinner theater, or a shortened version of the story. In the same way, the law and prophets were given to the Hebrews to be dinner theater to them, to teach the same story.

In the type, Egypt is the world system to which we are all enslaved. The desert is this life where our goal is to put the old man to death as we put on the new man in Christ, and the promised land is the Kingdom of God or heaven.

The trials in the desert are the trials we face in this life. We can murmur and complain about them, or we can use them to learn to trust God more. The latter draws us closer to God.

So back to the main question: According to the Bible we were not set free from Egypt to do our own thing. We were set free from sin, to dwell with and serve God.
