Present simple has one main verb. For all subjects except he/she/it use the base form of the verb.
I like ice cream. They like ice cream. We like ice cream. You like ice cream.
For he/she/it add -s to the verb.
He likes ice cream. She works in a school. It likes playing. (my dog).
For negative sentences use do not (don't) or for he/she/it use does not (doesn't).
They don't like ice cream. He doesn't like ice cream.
Present tense verbs are verbs that are set in the present; they show an action that is being done now.
Ex: He is getting the paper.
"Is getting" is in the present tense.
Often, present tense verbs are accompanied by "is" or "are" to show that it is being done now.
Hope I heldped! :D
ANDPresent simple is a present tense that has one verb eg (verb in bold)I like ice cream. They likeice cream. He/she/it likes ice cream.
I go to work. You go to work. He/she/it goes to work.
These kinds of present sentences are used to talk about something that is a habit eg I get up at 7:00am.
Or something that is true now eg I live in Paraparaumu.
Or something thing that is always true eg The sun rises in the east.
Present continuous - be + verb - ing eg am/is/are waiting is used to talk about:
something that is happening now - I am usingthe computer. She is using the computer. They are using the computer.
or something that is happening around now (not necessarily right now) - I am reading a good book.
or something that is in the future - We are having a party tomorrow.
It is helpful if you look at teaching tenses as teaching form and function
As with teaching any tense present simple should be taught within a context.
The contexts for teaching the function of present simple are usually:
talking about yourself and family eg I am married. I have three children. I live, work etc
talking about your daily routine - I get up at 7:00, I have breakfast, I do the dishes, catch the bus, etc
For the form you have to teach the form for third person and singular noun subjects = verb+s. This also involves the various spellings of the third person verb.
He likes ice cream. The policeman likes ice cream.
She watches TV all day. (note spelling of watch).
It is also good to stress why it is called present simple = there is only one verb in the present simple tense. Many students make the mistake - I am go to school - I think it helps to correct this mistake if they can get the idea: simple = one verb.
