While it is true that most people like the action to start from the moment they open that book, the Twilight craze has become inevitable in most teenage girls over the last year. And like all crazes, it will pass. Not everybody likes to read about teenagers who fall in love with old men. If you're trying to write a story then do it about something you are interested in. Trying to please the masses will probably result in you disliking what you've written.

For 3-5 year olds I would say mainly Peppa Pig, maybe Iggle Piggle for the lower end of the scale.

5-8 year olds I would probably say Mermaid or Fairie Books. I have a sister who is 7 and she is very into the Rainbow Fairie Books.
