When a person thinks of writing a letter, you may think of writing a friend or family member. However, there are types of letters and they include business, followups, recommendation, and thank yous.

A letter should always be well written and the ability to write impressive letters is an art. Letters are used to convey a message and usually preserved as memories. All letters follows a format and generally includes the date, a salutation, the body of the letter, and the signature. The context of a letter can be casual or formal. A letter can be hand written, typed or E-mailed.

Following are different formats/styles of letter writing......

1. Block Style

   All sections of the letter are flush against the left margin of the page. Each paragraph in the body of the letter begins flush left margin, with a one space line dividing each paragraph.

2. Semi-block Style

   The date, signature, and address heading (if not on preprinted letterhead stationary) are aligned on the right side of the page. All other sections are flush left margin. Paragraphs in thebody of the letter begin flush left with a one space line dividing each paragraph.

3. Indented Style

   The date, signature, and address heading (if not on preprinted letterhead stationary) are aligned on the right side of the page. The greeting is flush left. Paragraphs in the body of the letter are indented with no space line between paragraphs. Postscript and notations are flush left.

4. Memorandum Style or Memo

   This is a business format that is best used for interoffice correspondence. Directly above the body of the memorandum, are the following sections flush left:

   "Date:"

   "To:" Name or column of names of those people to whom memorandum is being sent. (listed in alphabetical order by surname).

   "From:" Writer's name. Title, if any, listed directly below name.

   "Re:" or "Subject:" Subject line may be emphasized by underlining, bold font or all capital letters.

   - Body text may be indented or block format.

   - Signature of writer not required on Memorandum

1. Personal letter writing:A personal letter is written to convey ones feeling towards their relatives, friends and towards people with whom one share an informal bonding. A personal letter can be used to show affection, love and disappointment by a person. For example: a letter to grandparents, parents and siblings thanking them for their wishes and gifts; a love letter to loved one, a letter to say sorry for misbehavior to some close relative or a letter to make a person realize his fault.

2. Letters conveying some issue:A letter written over the matters concerning to the society or other situation to some authority or other organizations. These letters can be written on behalf of a group of people (although signed by all people concerned). For example: a letter showing concern over the sanitation problem in the locality; a letter requesting the authorities to maintain public properties.

3. Business letter writing:Many letters are written to passed in day to day operation of a business. Letter for interview, letter for job selection, letter for resignation, letter for promotion and letter for conveying grievances are part of business letters
