There are several different types of Hindu Holy Men.
Sadhus, or ascetics, practice cult religions such as Shakta or Naga. They practice rituals involving fire, water, yoga, and meditation, and beg for a living, following the lifestyle of Lord Shiva.
Rishis, or sages are regarded as the bearers of the ancient Vedic values. They follow the way of knowledge (jnanamarga) and are thought to be blessed with divine knowledge.
Santas (saints), as they were known collectively, were proponents of a medieval social reform. They shunned practices based on the Caste System, and sought to reach God through devotion (bhaktimarga).
Swamijis are heads of sects or religious schools of thought (muthas or mathas; see The Institution of Mutha). Typically scholars and philosophers, they run educational and social institutions and participate in philosophical debates. Swamis are elevated to the status of deities.
Pujaris, or priests are professional clerics who usually live in temples and perform ritual ceremonies, fund raising, and daily/festival worships. They are often Brahmins, who have inherited the profession.
