There are only two varieties of Indian head nickels.
When the coin was introduced in 1913 the reverse side showed the buffalo standing on a low mound of earth. The design was difficult to strike so a few months later the image was modified to remove the mound and show the buffalo on flat ground. That image was used for the rest of the coin's run until 1938.
Those with a mound are known as Type I nickels while the others are called Type II
1913 is the first year for Indian Head nickels.
