Why are there gaps between the slabs of concrete pavements?

There are 2 reasons for that. Reason one: They can be expansion joints. In the winter the pavement contracts and in the summer it expands. these joints are generally gaps that go the whole way threw the pavement. Generally these joints are filled with some sort of caulking to keep moisture from getting underneath the pavement. Reason two: They can be put there as joints for the concrete to crack. when sidewalks are made and other concrete pavements, they anticipate the concrete cracking, so they put in gaps that dont go all the way threw the depth of the concrete as a place for the concrete to crack and not be unsightly.

What are some advantages and disadvantage of adopting SI in the US?

The US will save millions of dollars wasted on unit conversion in industry and commerce and i dont know any disadvantages ==================================== One disadvantage: Political suicide for anybody who pushes it through. Americans still think it's an unnecessary burden, and are firmly convinced that we should not have to put out all that effort. If the rest of the world wants to trade with us, why then let them change back to units we can understand. If it's still good enough for Liberia and Myanmar, it ought to still be good enough for us. The whole thing is nothing but another liberal plot to get power over ordinary folks. If the good lord had intended for us to use meters, he would not have given us feet.

Why are there gaps is a road deck of a bridge?

== == On older sections of bolted track the gaps were put in to allow for thermal expansion of the rails. On continuous welded rail the gaps are not intentional but the most likely result of removing a defect in the rail. Gaps in the rails are most likely not intentional but a result of the steel warping or twisting from the weight and inertia of the constant train traffic. In older sections of track the wood ties that support the tracks my be decomposing causing gaps. Many railroads are upgrading to a continuous rail where they use thermite to weld the rails together at the seems, this improves the stability of the tracks and to improve the rail infrastructure.

What is tesalation?

Tessellation: to form or arrange patterns of shapes in a layout that leaves no gaps or overlays. So basically, its a series of shapes that are put together leaving no gaps or any overlaps. for example, lots of squares put together would leave no gaps but a circle wouldn't work because if you put them together they leave gaps.
