I hope that you, the questioner, are wondering due to a calling towards the priesthood. Priesthood in the absence of the Lord's calling is extremely harmful to the sacred vocations. There are many benefits to being a priest. First, as a priest you have the powerful ability to minister to people of all ages. You will get to travel and live in several different places. You will be able to experience true brotherhood with other priests. You will get to live a life completely focused service, self-sacrifice, and the will of God. This is what our lives are supposed to be focused on, and as a priest you will be able to share in fellowship in your journey towards the Lord's kingdom.

There are also some serious disadvantages to the priesthood, but these only apply in the absence of a calling. If you are called to be a priest, then that vocation is obviously going to provide for you the most meaningful and fulfilling life. If you are called to be a married man, priesthood will not fit. As a priest, you will be unable to marry, date, or have sexual relations of any kind. You will work hard, and all profit will go towards the communal fund for your brothers in Christ.

Although these seem like serious disadvantages, a life following the Lord's calling will be more fulfilling than anything many can plan on our own. I hope you seriously listen to the Lord's voice as you consider priesthood. You will be in my prayers.

One disadvantage of being Catholic is discrimination by the worldly. Anti-Catholicism is often considered the last acceptable prejudice.
