If you run the built-in Windows defragger while using the computer, then the defragger will pretty much do nothing even if there are free system resources because it's resource utilization algorithms are not very good. Overall, the defrag will take a very long time. Combine this with the fact that the defragger doesn't even defrag all files properly, and the whole operation becomes a waste of time.

However, third party defrag utilities, especially the advanced commercial utilities, that are specifically designed as automatic background defraggers have no such problems. They utilize the unused system resources effectively and calibrate their operation accordingly. So, you can use the computer yet get the defrag done in the background (but remember to disable the windows default defragger when using a third party utility).

Why is the defragmenter taking so long?

Most likely you have processes running in the background during testing, or rather, you are using the computer while the defrag is running. Assuming your using windows 98+ Hit ctrl-alt-del and end any task that isn't necessary for your computer to function, example Systray and such. You can do a Google search for your proccess and see what is nessary.

What happenes when you try to run another program while Disk Defragmenter is running Why does this happen?

If you are running XP, while using the built in tool, make sure that no other program runs to interrupt its task, otherwise it may hang or restart. If you are running Windows Vista, its designed to defrag on its own and doesnt show a graphic or fragmentation visuals. Its however very slow and runs in low priority in the background. To be able to use the PC normally without conflicting with the defragmenter, you need to install a third party program like Diskeeper which can be run on automatic mode. It defrags silently even as you work.

Why will the defrag in your Windows 7 not start?

There could be any number of reasons. There could be a problem with your defrag program. There might be a problem with another program that is keeping defrag from working correctly. The Disk Defragmenter Program Service may not be be running. Try using a free download of either Iobit, Advanced System Care, or Smart Defrag2 from Download.com to keep your PC running smoothly.

Do you need to run parallel if you are running snow leopard on your mac for windows based programs?

Windows programs require the Windows operating system to be installed on a Mac. Windows can be installed (using the Boot Camp utility) and the Mac restarted so it is just running Windows like any other computer running Windows or it can be run in a virtual machine (using Parallels or Fusion etc.) which will put Windows in a Window on top of Snow Leopard. How do you connect a PC running Windows XP to a laptop running Linux?

This depends on how you want to "connect" them. If you install and configure Samba on the laptop, it can share files with Windows. If you are not interested in sharing files, but just want to control the laptop from within Windows, install an SSH server on the laptop, and connect to it from Windows using puTTY.
