NewHam, Towerhamlets, Southwark Are the Boroughs That Make Up the London Docklands. Created in 1981 to Re-Energize Lower East London. the Project Brought 120,000 Jobs to the Area and Is Now a Sought After Housing Area.
London Docks ceased to be used for shipping in the 1970's and 80's because modern ships had become too big to access them. Since then the Docklands area has been re-developed into a mixture of residential, commercial and light industrial premises.
The original docks have all closed down, mainly because modern ships are now too big to use them and now berth elsewhere. The area has been transformed into residential accommodation - some of it from refurbished warehouses, new office blocks and some light industry. Many of the newspaper publishers who used to be in central London have now moved to Docklands, as has the Billingsgate Fish Market. London City Airport is now on the site of the old King George V dock.
