"Wetlands" is a fancy name for "Swamps".
For two centuries, Americans, most notably the Army Corp of Engineers attempted to fill in and eradicate swamps in America, as they are hard to develop and breed diseases and large mosquito populations.
25 percent of them were eliminated.
Relatively recently, they were renamed "Wetlands", and declared protected. But the disadvantages still remain.
