Dogs are a subspecies of the Gray Wolf.
Wild dogs, arctic foxes, jackals and bobcats are all predator to the Arctic hare. ( Possibly wolves to if they are hungry enough ! But they usually look for bigger prey ).

Dogs are wolves that have been bred into looking a certain way. Wolves are the original, and dogs are how humans wanted their pets to look.

Coyotes or "bush wolves" are canine and therefore look like dogs. Because they are wild, they are often much leaner than regular dogs.
Coyote tracks look like dog tracks - 4 toes and a heel - the dog's is rounder and the claws show; the coyote's track is more poined and and 4 toes are closer together
The answer is more a case of- why do dogs belong to the family of wolves? Dogs are the direct descendants of wolves, and so belong to that family. Some dogs don't look like they have wolf ancestors, but they do. Others look very similar, such as alsations.
