A Priest is the highest office in the Aaronic Priesthood. (The church has an Aaronic or "preperatory" Priesthood, and the Melchizedek Priesthood, which is only for adult males.) Most all male members of the church are ordained priests at the age of 16, unless they convert after that age, in which case it is often a few weeks to a year after their baptism. Priests have the responisibilities and authority of the lower offices in the Aaronic Priesthood (deacon and teacher) as well as some of their own. All members of the Aaronic Priesthood have the authority pass the sacrament (communion) to the congregation. They also visit members of the congregation and collect fast offerings (donations for the poor collected after a day of fasting), assist the Bishop and other congregation leaders, teach the gospel and assist in missionary work. In addition, Priests have the authority to bless the sacrament (communion), ordain others to the Aaronic Priesthood, and to baptize. If by priest you mean the man who leads a congregation, we use the term Bishop (or Branch President in small congregations). They have different duties, but can perform the duties of a priest if there are none available. The duties of the Priest come from a revelation given to Joseph Smith which is now in section 20 of our Doctrine and Covenants. It can be read at scriptures.lds.org/dc/20/46-52#46 with the pertinent verses highlighted.

The main duty of the prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is to receive revelation from God and give the members that message. The prophet is an amazing example, seer, and revelator to the members.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) has a very organized and hierarchical priesthood that is open to and held by most every male member of the Church.

To be ordained to an office of the priesthood, one must be interviewed by a local leader to determine if they are worthy to receive the office, and the congregation must give a vote of approval. The ordination must be given by someone who has already been ordained to that office. Ordinations are usually small affairs held with just a few family or friends, and are performed by the Ordainer placing his hands on the Ordanee's head and repeating a prayer. The prayer will sounds something like this:

"In the name of Jesus Christ and by the power of the Holy ______ Priesthood, which I hold, I ordain you to the office of ______ in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."

At age 12, a boy is ordained to the Aaronic priesthood (or 'preparatory' priesthood) and receives the office of Deacon. A Deacon's responsibilities are passing the sacrament to the congregation, giving temporal assistance to the congregation, and collecting offerings for the poor.

At age 14, a boy is ordained to the Aaronic Priesthood office of Teacher. A teacher's responsibility is the same as the Deacons, in addition to teaching members in their homes and preparing the sacrament.

At age 16, and boy is ordained to the Aaronic Priesthood office of Priest. A priest does all the above duties, and also has the authority to bless the sacrament, ordain others to the Aaronic priesthood, and to baptize.

Around age 19, a boy will be ordained to the office of Elder in the Melchizedek Preisthood (or 'higher' priesthood). He has the authority to do all the above duties, in addition to serving as a missionary, attend the temple, bless and heal the sick and afflicted, and perform confirmations and ordinations.

If a man is called to serve as a local leader, he will be ordained to the office of High Priest in the Melchizedek priesthood. A Bishop has an interesting role - he is both a High Priest and a member of the Aaronic Priesthood.

Other offiices in the Melchizedek Priesthood are Patriarch, Seventy, and Apostle. There are only 15 ordained Apostles at any given time. Patriarchs and Seventies are usually found regionally.

You can find out more about the Priesthood offices and ordinations at the "Related Links" below.
