The government couldn't contribute in bringing the trade sector into rehabilitation. Trade was hopeless, and the government was of no help.

Even the smallest aspect of the French nation was crumbling down into pieces. Economic woes, a weak leader, and crop failures to top the cake, all contributed in the French's decline in the trade section of its economy. The horrifying turn down of the French economy was a milestone marking the official start of the French revolution. High unemployment and high bread prices caused more money to be spent on food and less in other areas of the economy. The Roman Catholic Church, the largest landowner in the country, levied a tax on crops known as the dime or tithe. While the dîme lessened the severity of the monarchy's tax increases, it worsened the plight of the poorest who faced a daily struggle with malnutrition. There was too little internal trade and too many customs barriers.

The commercial revolution led to an expansion of trade through much of the world.

It also led to what is called the Colombian exchange, in which animals, plants, and diseases were transported between the Old World to the New World, in both directions. The Europeans benefited with the introduction of potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, cocoa, coffee, maize, and other vegetables.

A number of New World nations were destroyed in this process, and their lands became European colonies.

A number of European nations became wealthy empires. The effects were felt to greatest effect in Spain, but also in Portugal, France, England, and elsewhere.

The rapid increase in the available supply of gold and silver from the New World caused rapid inflation in the Europe.
