when a body is heated, the kinetic energy of the molecules, atoms, electrons or ions of the body increases depending upon of what particles the body is composed of. For instance, if liquid water is being heated, KE of the molecules of the system increases. if it is a salt, obviously the KE of the ions increases and in case of metals KE of the electrons and the metal ions increases and so on. now if the substance is a conductor, it will share its energy with the other neighboring particles, making the body heated uniformly until it melts at its melting point. if it is an insulator or nonconductor like a piece of wood, energy can be transferred to the neighboring particles and it will burn upon heating.
