Is there a face on the moon?

According to major research on the moon in 2010, The moon does not have a face. The dark spots on the moon are dark, basaltic material like earth lava, that flowed out of the lunar interior when the Moon was only about 3.3 billion years old. People can be fooled to think that this forms a face shape, but up close really it does not.

We look at clouds and see sheep.

Whenever we say something "looks like ...", that just means that our brain has made a

connection. Somebody else may look at the same thing and not see the "looks like ..."

at all.

In some human cultures, the marks on the full moon 'look like' an elephant. In others,

the marks 'look like' a monkey jumping through the air.

If you mean the black markings, they are called maria (mar-e-a), which means "sea" in Latin. In old times the ancient Romans thought that the maria were oceans on the moon. We now know that the black markings came from lava that oozed to the surface up from the moons core when the moon was still warm.

Not really. We human beings are excellent at seeing patterns - even patterns that do not actually exist. The "Man in the Moon" is one such; there are a series of craters and maria on the Moon which suggest the general shape of a face, and so we can all see the pattern that is suggested to us.

The shapes of constellations in the stars works on the same principle.
