The immune system is what mounts an immune response. It complex and consists of various barriers: chemical barriers, inflammation, general cellular barriers, and the specific barriers like antibodies.

Immunogenicity is the ability of a pathogen/organism/molecule to induce an immune response by the body. The factors that determine immunogenicity are:

  • Foreignness: the more foreign the substance to the body, the greater its immunogenicity
  • Molecular weight: larger molecules are more immunogenic; molecules that are too small (usually less than 10 000, others less than 5000) are are too small to induce an immune response (they are called haptens)
  • Chemical complexity: molecules with repeating subunits are less immunogenic than those with complex patterns
  • Degradability: very large molecules (or macromolecules) that cannot be degraded cannot easily be processed by APCs (antigen-presenting cells) and are therefore less immunogenic
  • Dosage: the dosage of certain substances must be within a specific range in order to elicit an immune response.
  • Adjuvants: these are substance which increase immunogenicity when mixed with an antigen

How is the immunogenicity determined?

if the antigen is more foreign , then the immunogenicity is high if the immune response is high, then the immunogenicity is also high Immunogenicity of Antigens : •Determined by -Foreignness -Molecular Size -Chemical Composition -Degradability •Influenced by -Host genotype -Dose and route of administration -Presence of adjuvants

Is immunogenicity suitable for development of vaccines?

Immunogenicity is the characteristic of being able to stimulate an immune response, which is exactly what a vaccine is supposed to do.

What is the role of adjuvants?

adjuvants are substances that when mixed with isolated antigen, increases its immunogenicity, thereby provoking inflammation and draws large number numbers of immune system cells to the site of injection.

Why do all molecules which have the property of antigenicity do not have the property of immunogenicity?

Because we know that all molecules that act as antigens produce an antibody so they have a property of antigenicity but not all give the immune response.
