The World Heath Organization came out with a study on June 21, 2000 that showed the U.S ranked 37th out of 91 countries in its health care system. This was interesting that many more developed countries were considered higher then the U.S on this list since healthcare was left more to a capitalistic society.
Healthcare has always been a debate in the U.S. Mostly the reason is due to the fact of individuals paying large amounts of medical bills. It is one of the main reasons why people fall into bankruptcy. Though people may have coverage, some patients would wind up having to pay large deductibles (money you pay before triggering the insurance) and percentages of the bill (i.e. 80% insurance pays/20% participant pays structures). Another cause of debate are individuals that have a pre-existing conditions (called pre-ex) and are denied by insurance carriers since they cannot make money off the participant (i.e heart issues). Another factor is the cost of prescription drugs. If a participant does not have insurance, they pay this in full. Most insurance will group drugs into 3 or 4 tiers. If a participant needs a type of medication that is not on the list, then it doesn't matter if you have insurance or not. This drug would be purchased for full cost. Finally, one of the largest groups of uninsured Americans are ones that are around 22-26 years old (Gen Y's). Many states have recognized this and inputted laws prior to the health reform allowing these people to stay on their parent's health coverage without fulfilling a student requirement.
The final vote for the healthcare reform is 219-212
The US government runs Medicaid and Medicare and I think they are pretty solid. Private healthcare companies are thieves and robbers, and that's why they are blocking the efforts of the government to have healthcare reform.

I think she's Betsy McCoy aka Betsy McCaughey who is the author of the Death Panel propaganda. Rumor is that she has ties to Philip Morris tobacco company. Her time with Philip Morris was 'off the record'. This occurred while President Clinton was attempting to pass healthcare reform early in his first term. She stands as a central figure in the neocon's efforts to derail President Obama's attempts at healthcare reform.
