An ulcer is an erosion in the mucosal layer of the digestive tract.

A gastric ulcer occurs in the lining of the stomach.

A duodenal ulcer is an ulcer that occurs in the mucosa of the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine).

Both types of ulcers have been known to be caused by the bacteria Helicobacter pylori and are easily treatable. If untreated, they can lead to stomach cancer.
