If they're all inside the hub they're called internal gears, and consist of something mechanics refer to as "planetary" gears.
If they are toothed discs that sit outside the hub they're called sprockets. The whole assembly is either a multi-speed freewheel. or a "cassette" for a freehub.
The gears on the rear wheel are called a cassette
gears and wheel and axle
There has to be a gear cluster attached to the rear wheel , this is connected to a lever on the handle bars, allowing you to move the chain to each of these gears to give different speeds. Usually between 3-6 gears on this.
A sprocket is another name for a toothed wheel that meshes with the chain.

I'd say the gears on a bike acts as levers, as pedals and driven wheel turns with different speeds and force.
An example of simple gears is the chain, chain-wheel and free-wheel sprocket as used on a single geared bicycle. More complicated gearing is the modern bicycle's derailleur system of multiply chain-wheels, a cluster of sprockets, a chain, and gear changer mechanism.
A bike is compound machine. This means that it is made up of a bunch of different simple machines. Screws are used to hold the pieces together. The wheel of a bicycle is a wheel and axle. The pedals are also examples of this simple machine. The pedals are attached to a lever that turns a pulley. The gear shifts and brake handles are levers.I hope this helps =)the simple machine found in a bicycle are:
The rear wheel has a different hub; the gears attach to it. Alternatively the rear hub has gears or a brake or a dynamo built into it. The front hub will sometimes have a dynamo built into it, other than that it is just a plain hub.
There are a lot of machines in the world that contain a wheel and axle such as wheel chairs, a bicycle sprocket, compound bows, gears, drill, sharpener and plenty others.
Gears. Gears are circular objects of different sizes that are attached in such a way that they rotate together to transmit motion.
