The differences are too numerous to list, but a few of the major ones:

  • Mars has no plate tectonics, so it has no subduction zones and this means the surface of the planet remains relatively old instead of being routinely resurfaced like Earth.
  • In general Martian terrain features are many magnitudes larger than equivalent structures on Earth, for example the largest canyon on Mars is 11km deep, Vs the Earth's Grand Canyon at a mere 3km
  • Mars features a type of geology not seen on Earth known as "chaos terrain", which seems to be caused by vast underground water ice deposits erupting out, carving IMMENSE river channels; often hundreds of kilometers long in very short time spans. Once the water source is depleted the surface collapses forming a crazed indentation in the surface, often kilometers deep.
  • Since the martian surface has no rain nor plate tectonics to erode the surface features, and a thin atmosphere it bears numerous impact craters from meteorites.
