Dublin is a coastal city, built at the mouth of the river Liffey, on the east coast of Ireland, so it is close to sea level. To the south of the city there are mountains, so you get higher as you head south. The mountains are not very high and you are well out of the city before you reach them and it begins to get noticeably higher. The nearest mountains are only about 1475 feet or 450 metres. They are the northern end of the Wicklow mountains, which has some higher mountains, further south.

To the north of Dublin there are no mountains, but you do get higher up as you get further from the centre of the city and the river. To the west is fairly level too as you are initially following the river Liffey, and then heading into the Irish midlands, which are low lying.
