The expressed intent of the Buddha (Buddhism's founder) is to provide a path that leads out of the suffering of this current existence towards complete happiness. The foundation of this intent is in understanding the four noble truths, as far as I know all Buddhist traditions take their basis from the four noble truths, although how they apply other teachings and practices may differ. Buddha taught different systems and methods thus reflecting the diverse nature of people and this is in part reflect the evolution and development of Buddhism

If Buddhists follow the four noble truths in my opinion they follow the intent and practises of the historical Buddha.
