Installing the distributor and Setting up timing on the 283-350V8 and 396-454. Number one is determine win you set the distributor in. you must determine the firing stroke with the compression gage or you coed get it 180 degrees of and it will spit fire and back fire. Remove your number one plug (Standing in front of the car facing the engine number one is the front plug on the right (drivers side) attach a cylinder compression gage and rotate the engine crack shaft until the timing mark is 10-12 degrees BTDC (Before top dead sinter. Theses marcs are on the front of the engine and on the damper) now check the gage if you have compression then your engine is on its firing stroke if you do not have compression then your on the exost stroke. Turn it until you have compression and the timing marks line up Now insert the distributor with vacuum add vans at the too o-clock position and the rotor pointing at the one o-clock position now set the cap on turning the distributor so that the rotor points directly at one of the brass or aluminum posts on the distributor cap. That post is the number one spark plug weir position work your way clockwise around the cop in this order 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. Standing in front of the car facing the engine, number one is the front plug on the right (drivers side). on the right bank is 1 3 5 7 and left bank is 2,4 6 8 number one is determine win you set the distributor in. you must determine the firing stroke with the compression gage or you coed get it 180 degrees of and it will spit fire and back fire.
