The ones at end of a guitar (on the headstock) are called tuners, tuning pegs or tuning posts. The ones on the front of the body are the control pots/knobs (volume, tone).
Its where the strings are stretched over from the tuning knobs. Its sometimes called the 'zero' fret.
Try turning down all knobs on your bass. Some basses have two volume knobs, one for each pickup.
Not that my name references the thing your talking about, but a machine head refers to the metal knobs on the stock of the guitar that you twist in order to tune a guitar and that is what the strings are wrapped around. My name refers to the band.
A hollow guitar is called an Acoustic guitar.
On my Les Paul, you just pull out on the knob and it pops off. Some knobs my have a small screw on the side that needs to be loosened first, (but not all the way out or you might loose it) and it will come off.
There are two knobs on a guitar. One is the tone knob, which is used when tuning the guitar right pitch and sound you want out of the guitar. The other is for your volume, which is obviously used to toggle between the loudness or quietness of the guitar.

The answer is...... see those little twisty things at the end of your guitar? Those are called the knobs. Hold down the string you want to tune up and twist the correct one. If you don't understand what I'm saying, look in your beginners book. Have fun playing, Tobyhope07
On the head of the guitar there are the tuning knobs. If you tighten them, you get a higher pitch. If you loosen them you get a lower pitch.Hope this helps :D
You turn the knobs to change the pitch. I would reccomend buying a guitar tuner that will show if the string is sharp or flat.
synaptic knobs (or axon terminals<--more commonly used name)

You can buy anelectric tuner that tells you if it's the right sound, if you're good at music you can do it by yourself or you can ask some one else who knows how. You tune a guitar by turning the silver knobs at the end of the neck. CAUTION!: If you turn it too tight, you can snap the strings!!!
