I was told by a gun collector that a five digit number on an imported derringer is not a serial number- it is a lot number ( a serial number should be at least 6 digits) what about the proof markings on the gun? can this identify the company or date or just the country of origin?
That is not the serial number. It is the Patent Number. The serial number is found below this number. The Model 37 I have has this patent number on it and the serial number is 24071. I would also like to know the manufacture date of this rifle.

No, the serial number on the engine is totally different from the VIN number on the frame. The only info you can get from your engine number is date and origin of manufacture. The frame VIN number and engine numbers are always different.

Made in 1992. Look on the weapon and it will tell you where.
Look up the serial number (usually found on the back of the headstock) on the manufacturers website. This usually returns information such as the year it was produced and lot number.

The maker's marks on gumball machines are typically found on the base or the inside of the machine. Look for stamps, engravings, or labels that indicate the manufacturer's name, logo, or serial number.
