Playa del Carmen is on the eastern shore of the Yucatan Peninsula, which is basically a flat land composed of limestone. Due to this nature, there are almost no topographic features, nor surface rivers; most water comes from holes in the ground known as cenotes. With a tropical savanna climate (Köppen Aw), you will find in the southern and western vicinity of Playa del Carmen several mangrove forests.
