There will be several dark lines on a map, illustrating roads, power lines etc, BUT you probably mean contour lines.
These are lines of equal altitude and are usually coloured brown for land, or blue for snow or ice fields.
There can be various lines on a map, but the ones you are probably thinking of are 'latitude' and 'longitude'.
They indicate positions of the same high above sea level
Index contour lines........
the decides
That would be a topographical map. It uses contour lines (usually 100 or 50 ft. incraments) to show elevation above or below sea level. They're usually black & white and can be found wherever you can find maps.
The numbers on contour lines show the different elevations. Lets say one contour line says it has 1450 elevation. That means it is on the highest peak. When you see other numbers, that is just the elevation
The two measurements that show land elevation on a map are feet above sea level and meters above sea level. The map itself has contour lines in order to distinguish elevations.
Elevations, or altitudes, irrespective of longitude and latitude, use spot heights for individual points like summits, and contour-lines to trace levels across the landscape at particular elevations. The heights may be in feet or (more universally now) metres.
Water flows downhill. Contour lines show the slope of the landscape, and the direction a stream must flow.
The darker contour lines on map are called index contour lines. Numbers that indicate elevations are often written on these lines.
A contour map. The lines are called contour lines
With eight contour lines that follow the upward elevations in increments of 10 feet.
A topographic map would show elevations and contours.

contour maps are maps that depict contour line. they contain lines of equal heights that are joined together and help to show elevations, terrain shape and many other features of the earth
Contour lines show levels of elevation, where there are hills and valleys on a map
The numbers on contour lines show the different elevations. Lets say one contour line says it has 1450 elevation. That means it is on the highest peak. When you see other numbers, that is just the elevation
Maps can show elevation with contour lines
you can determine the direction a stream flows on a contour map by seeing which way the contour lines bend.

Contour lines show elevation.
