Since the list can easily change, the best place to check what is not allowed in checked luggage is the TSA website. Generally, anything flammable is not permitted. Firearms and ammo are allowed, but you must follow specific instructions. Check with your airline before making your reservations or going to the airport.
If you have something you would like to bring along and it is not specifically listed, you can send TSA a picture of the item via Facebook or Twitter and they will get back to you. I did that about some toys and food items and they replied very quickly.
