Some of the short term effects were the creation of the "all volunter army (military)" which ended the draft, and the voting age lowered from 21 to 18. A long term effect, nearly twenty years later, was the "properly" executed Operation Desert Storm in 1991. Which was accomplished with minimal casualties, minimal loss of equipment, lasted less than 30 days, and the mission was accomplished. The US Generals that conducted that operation had fought in Vietnam, and learned from their experience, and then put it to use.
