I remember you told me I could be anything that I want to be, so I'm gonna be the first black teenage mutant ninja turtle." It's obvious they aren't black. They say s*** like 'kowabunga' and 'dude'. And ill be named after a renaissance artist too, only I'll be Langston, the turtle with a pen. And I'll go around writing verbally violent poems about all the evil doers in the world. So a little over a month ago, I'm back in Ms. North's fifth grade class and I'm lecturing kids about the importance of education, and this little kid who sort of reminds me of myself raises his hand and says, "So Mister, with all this education what have you become?" I looked him square in the eye and said, "I'm a f***ing teenage mutant ninja turtle… Only on Saturdays because every other day I am ruler of the universe simply on the grounds that I'm a writer, and it's my education that has advanced those abilities."

You see, through my poetry I've written myself into worlds. I've made trade negotiations with both Castro and Saddam, made the U.S. live sanctions. And we never dropped bombs in places like Baghdad or Vietnam.

You see, through my poetry, young mothers were never sad because they outlived their sons and guns never found their way to the hood and we replaced statements like 'it's all good' with revolutionary cries. Because sometimes, the s*** is all bad. See through my poetry, I've written myself into any world I please. I became ruler of the universe. I became the first black teenage mutant ninja turtle and I could always go back to elementary."
