Super computers can handle vast amounts of data in a relatively short time, for example in data modeling, gene comparisons, universe mapping. A key to this is really the maths processing, with the ability to stream data into it.
If you convert any formula to its logarithmic equivelent then what you get is a sum that is only ever addition, subtraction is the addition of a compliment, any modern CPU can do addition is less than one clock cycle. A maths processor lets you simply stream these sums into it so you get many more maths operations per clock cycle.
The disadvantage is it will not fit in your bedroom.
Clusters are a good alternative to a super computer, in this case the processing is shared by how ever many CPUs you have in your cluster. Converting formula to their logarithmic equivelents will yeild very good speed advantages, the down side tends to be that to get this working correctly on modelling, you have to introduce 'waits' or pre-split the formula so that no process has to wait for another part of the sum to finish before it can begin. (this is not the same for general CPU work, which can be split without 'waits.
