What are the main dishes of Italian food?
Pasta al sugo is the most common one. It's pasta with tomato sauce.
Other than that there are many other kinds of pasta, as lasagna, ravioli, cannelloni. Each of them can be combined with a variety of dressings.
Another typical example could be the cold cuts, as raw ham (prosciutto crudo), mortadella (bologna), salami and bacon (pancetta).
Talking about meat, there are many roasted ones, as the Roman "porchetta", the Sardinian "porcetto", and "vitello tonnato"(meat with tuna sauce).
Regarding desserts, number one is, in my opinion, tiramisu, close to panna cotta and others. Ana Maria da Costa http://www.all-about-italian-food.com

Considering that the ancient Romans were Italian, you could say that all the foods that they ate were Italian foods. However, they did not have the foods that we, today, think of as "Italian" such as pizza and pasta dishes with tomato sauces. The identical foods would have been the seafoods such as octopus and various shellfish.
