  • There are 17 species of penguin
  • They all live in the Southern Hemisphere, with the exception if a few around the Galápagos Islands.
  • They have feathers which are tightly compacted together.
  • When a Galapagos penguin goes on shore, it covers its feet with its flippers to stop it getting sunburned.
  • Penguins are black and white for camouflage - when a predator looks below them, they see the black back, which resembles the bottom of the sea, and when they look above they see white which is the colour of the sky or ice from down below.
  • Penguins have tails for balance and a gland near the tail produces an oily substance which penguins then spread around their body in a process called 'preening'.
  • Penguins have webbed feet which help them propel themselves through the water as well as flippers doing that.
  • When penguins feed their chicks, they eat their food and regurgitate it for their chick so it is easier for them to eat.

  • Magellanic penguins average 70cm in length.
  • They are only found around the Falkland Islands and South America.
  • During breeding season, which begins in September, they lay two eggs four days apart.
  • It takes 40 days to incubate the eggs.
  • Chicks are ready to leave the burrow after around 30 days.
  • Sadly, it is estimated that about 40,000 Magellanic penguins are killed by oil pollution every year along the coast of Argentina.

Penguins are Flightless Birds that spend a lot of time in the water. Their feathers are adapted to trap air, and this promotes buoyancy. In addition, the feathers work with a layer of fat under their skin to assist in keeping the birds warm. They cannot use their wings to fly as other birds, but those wings, are extremely well adapted to allow them to "fly" through the water. The backs of these birds are dark, and their bellies are light colored or white. This countershading makes it harder for a predator to see them, either from the top or the bottom.

Their eyes of the penguin are adapted to see under water, and they may be nearsighted out of the water. In addition to their physical features, they can drink salt water and excrete the salt. The birds can control blood circulation, and this permits them to dive fairly deeply and stay under water for several tens of minutes.
