He was a meticulous researcher (his book's name Historia means 'researches') and got most of his account right. There are some glitches such as the strength of Xerxes' army, where he gives its strength as over 2 million, which was the strength of the empire levy, not the best troops he took with him numbering 180,000. Similarly the naval strength of 1200 at the battles was realistically about 400, not much more than the 370 of the Greek fleet.

He gives a coherent account of the background and events. Was Herodotus unbiased against the battle of marathon?

He told it as he knew it, from his 'Researches' of information he found over fifty years after the event. It was a bit glossed up, as his account was delivered in paid lectures in Athens. He had to be accurate, because his audience had been brought up on stories of the Persian wars, and some had actually participated in the battle, whom he no doubt had consulted.

What contribution did Herodotus give to history?

Herodotus, often referred to as the "Father of History," made several important contributions to the field. He is known for writing the first comprehensive, systematic account of the past, known as The Histories. Herodotus also introduced the practice of critical inquiry and cross-referencing multiple sources in his work, setting a high standard for historical accuracy. His approach to historiography influenced later historians and helped establish the study of history as a discipline.
