"If you give a person a fish feed them more a day, but if you teach a person to fish feed them for a life time" If you change the "fish" to self sustainable happiness then this illistrates the Buddhas message. The Buddha said he taught only four things. Suffering, the causes of suffering, the end of suffering, and the way to that end. In much simpler terms you may think of it as talking about the relationship with your own being. A bad relationship, and its causes. A wonderful relationship, and the way to that wonderful inner relationship. This inner relationship is something existing right here and right now. So the process of observing it, and skillfully cultivating it all exist right here and right now too. The Buddha's principles, and shared understandings like wise all exist right here and right now. I will list a link to many Mp3 talks on meditation by one of my teachers. His style of teaching mindfulness and other qualities of a healthy inner relationship is very straight forward and helps me even today. http://www.dhammatalks.org/ Just copy and paste the link into your web browser. They are for free distrabution, and I personally burn them to CD for the long commutes to work each day.

There are really only 2 distinct types of Buddhism, though there are subgroups to them. The two major groups are Theravada and Mahayana. Theravada is call the "teachings of the Elders" and is most closest to the original teachings of the Buddha. Mahayana incorporates teachings of later Buddhas and Bodisatvas into the Buddhas original teachings. How did popular Buddhism compare with original Buddhist teachings?

I am assuming that what you are asking is how does Buddhism today compare to what the Buddha taught. Buddhism over the years has been enriched by each culture that has been exposed to; changing the nature of practice just slightly each time. So Chan Buddhism (China) is slightly different in practice then is Zen Buddhism (Japan, Korea). But the teachings have always remained the same. Now when I speak of practice, it is the methods used to teach the Dharma (the teachings). The biggest change in Buddhism since the Buddha is the development of Mahayana Buddhism. Mahayana Buddhism, to which is the tradition I practice, added teachings from later Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to The Buddha's original teachings in regards to living a compassionate life to help all other beings. So Buddhism adapts the methods but never the message or teachings.
